On February 14th, 2011 National Science and Technology Awards Conference was held at the Great Hall of the People. A&F project “Theory and Practice on Efficient Utilization of Nitrogen and Phosphorus Nutrients in the Loess Plateau” presided by Professor Li Shengxiu was honored Second Prize of National Science and Technology Progress Award.

The Loess Plateau covers seven provinces with 150 million mu of cultivated land which is a typical dry farming areas and soil nutrient deficient areas of nitrogen and phosphorus. The efficient utilization of nitrogen and phosphorus in drought areas makes profound significance in improving crop production of the area and ensuring food security for the country.

The project has cultivated more than 160 doctoral and postgraduate students for years, making the team characterized by theory and practice research of nutrients efficient utilization in the Loess Plateau and influential both at home and abroad. The team has published 482 papers, in which 46 were employed by SCI, and were quoted a total of 8105 times. Two papers were published in the international soil authoritative journals Advances in Soil Science, and three in one of the top three international agriculture journals Advances in Agronomy. Three published monographs are Plant Nitrogen in China upland soil, China Dryland Agriculture, and Dryland Agriculture in China.

The theoretical and technological achievements of efficient utilization of Nitrogen and Phosphorus in dryland areas were widely used in the Loess Plateau since 1960s. After the year of 2002, the cumulative demonstration areas reached 410 million mu, grain production increased 1.19 billion kg, and output value added 2.31 billion yuan. The project achieved remarkable social and ecological benefits.
