College of Forestry
The College of Forestry was reformed on the basis of the amalgamation of relevant disciplines of former separate institutes, namely Northwest Forestry College, Shaanxi Academy of Forestry, Northwest Botanic Research Institute and Northwest Agricultural University, etc. and has become an important base both for forestry research and for cultivating high-level talents of forestry. There are 221 teaching and research staff currently, of whom 22 are professors or researchers; 69 are associate professors or associate researchers; 23 have doctoral degree and 50 have master degree, with 14 doctoral supervisors, 67 master supervisors, and 6 teachers and research fellows accredited with the title of Experts with Outstanding Contributions at national, ministerial or provincial levels. 8 staff have enjoyed Government Allowance (a kind of reward for the outstanding experts given by the State Council). Three teachers have been honored with the title of National Outstanding Teacher or Provincial Outstanding Teacher; and ten staff are granted with the title of either Across Century Leading Talents of Disciplines or three-fives talents.
The College offers for students 4 undergraduate programs that are forestry, landscape architecture,chemical engineering of forest product, and artistic designing; two Ph.D programs of silviculture and forest protection; six master programs, namely, silviculture, forest protection, tree genetics and breeding, forest management, protection and utilization of wild animals and plants, chemical engineering of forest products, as well as two disciplinary directions of forest ecology and forest phytology. There are currently over 1300 undergraduate students enrolled in the College and 182 graduate students pursuing master degree or doctoral degree. Adult education in the College involves two undergraduate programs of forestry and landscape run by correspondence and six two-year programs that are forestry, landscape, economic forest, forest tourism, floriculture and forest security. Specialties of forestry and landscape are also offered to the students through the approach of self-study examination, with1600 students enrolled so far. The College up to now has cultivated 5000 qualified talents, a great contribution to the construction of forestry of the country.
The college includes 5 departments (5 research institutes joined to each department), namely, forestry department (forestry research institute),forest engineering department (resources utilization research institute), landscape department (scenic landscape designing institute) and artistic designing department (ornamental art institute). Other divisions in the College include Qinling national ecological positioning station, Huoditang forest ecological positioning and research station of State Forestry Bureau, key silviculture laboratory on loess plateau of the State Forestry Bureau, key laboratory of ecological environment of the Ministry of Education, key comprehensive laboratory of forestry of Shaanxi, key development & utilization laboratory of economic plants of Shaanxi, northwest forestry research center, Shaanxi forestry research center, and Shaanxi Chinese date research center. Scenic landscape designing institute owns Grade B Certificate and qualification granted by the provincial construction department. Shaanxi Forest Science and Technology sponsored by the College has been a journal published for home and abroad.
The College also owns Huoditang forest farm in Qinling Mountains, Weihe experimental station, Nanwutai experimental station, Ankang experiemental station, Yan'an deontological garden and Yangling nursery for teaching and experimentation, totally covering over 30,000 mu (about 2000 hm2). College have been equipped with 2196 sets of apparatus and equipents.. Over 500 thousands of animals, insects and plants specimen as well as pathological specimen have been collected.
Over the past years, the College has accomplished over 280 scientific projects, of which 150 have got awards. Since the ninth five-year plan period onward ,the College has undertken more than 88 projects covering 863 program (a program initiated in 1986 with the aim of keeping track of hi-tech advancement in the world), 948 program (a program initiated in 1994 with the aim of introduction of advanced technology or leading achievements from abroad), 973 program ( a program initiated in 1997 with the focus on the development of national key basic researches), projects of national natural science foundation of China, key projects at provincial or ministerial levels as well as the extension projects. Over 1680 academic papers have been in publication at home or abroad journals and 68 monographs and textbooks have been published. Researches on tree breeding and selection, drought-resistant afforestation, ecological environment improvement on loess plateau, forest ecological system positioning, forest pest and diseases control, mouse control in forests, and tree mycorrhiza, as well as researches on Eucommia,Yam, Konjak and Maple (Acer truncatum bunge) have had significant progress, taking an advanced lead at home. In the field of afforestation on loess plateau, a considerable amount of tree species have been introduced successfully and techniques for afforestation of main tree species have been developed, with more than 30 new and fine varieties for economic trees such as popular, paulownia, Eucommia, Chinese date, kernel apricot, walnut, chestnut, kiwi and loquat, etc. having been selected and widely put into production consequently. For forest mouse control, 16 kinds in 2 serials of forest mouse killer or mouse expeller with no pollution to the environment have been successfully developed, a great technical support and contribution to the western ecological construction and six national forest programs.
In the new millennium, the College, with the integration of industry, research and education as the orientation, will join together the efforts to seize every opportunity to make greater contribution to the western ecological construction and sustainable development of forestry.
