College of Food Science and Engineering
The College of Food Science and Engineering, established in 1984, now has 94 faculty members, including 12 professors and researchers, 18 associate professors and associate researchers, 2 foreign experts, 7 doctoral supervisors and 21 masters' supervisors,13 with PhD degree and 27 with master's degree. There are several organizations attached to the college, including Food Quality Supervision Inspection and Testing Center (Yangling), Ministry of Agriculture, New Plant Variety Test Center, Yangling, Ministry of Agriculture, Agricultural Products Processing Engineering Center, Shaanxi Province, Organic Food Certification Center of Northwest A&F University and Testing Center of Northwest A&F University, Agricultural Product Quality Supervision Station, Shaanxi Province and Food Quality Research Center of Northwest A&F University. Currently the college has four research platforms, namely food bio-engineering, high-technologies in food engineering, food safety examination, and platform of Cereals, Oils and Vegetable Protein Engineering. The college has five teaching and research sections dealing with food technology, food chemistry, food engineering, food bio-engineering, and food quality and safety.
The college has been authorized to award the PhD degree in level I discipline-- food science and engineering. As a level I discipline, it covers four doctoral programs in Food Science, Cereals, Oils and Vegetable Protein Engineering, Processing and Storage of Agricultural Products, and Processing and Storage of Aquatic Products. The food science doctoral program was authorized in 2000 and began enrolling students in 2002. Besides these, this discipline also offers 4 master programs, 1 post-doctoral research station and 2 undergraduate programs, Food Science and Engineering and Food Quality and Safety.
In 2007, the enrollment reached 1082, including 29 and 135 postgraduate students for PhD and master degree respectively, 918 undergraduates and more than 120 professional master students in food engineering.
In recent 5 years the college has undertaken 150 projects, with a total funding of 15 million yuan. Among these projects, there are 15 national and ministerial projects supported by National Science and Technology Project, National Natural Science Foundation, National Span Project, Program of Western China Development, 11 provincial projects, and 77 local and cooperative projects. The college has been awarded 15 ministerial and provincial science and technology progress awards including one first grade award and two second and has obtained 10 invention patents, transferred more than 40 technological items. Additionally, the college has published 45 monographs, 19 textbooks and more than 400 academic papers. Among these papers, 26 papers were cited by SCI and more than 150 articles were published in Chinese top academic journals.
Taking the opportunity of the Project 985 construction and the assessment of undergraduate teaching sponsored by Ministry of Education, the college determines to strengthen the construction of teaching and research team, improve the teaching condition, enhance scientific and technological innovation, and develop itself into a first-class college in China and widely-known in the world.
