College of Humanities
The College of Humanities was established in July, 2000 with the merging of the College of Humanities of the former Northwest Agricultural University and the Social Science Department of the former Northwest Forestry College. Its history can date back to the establishment of Political Theory Research Group and the Ancient Agriculture Science Research Office of Northwest Agricultural College in 1953. Over half a century, many well-known scholars worked here such as Xin Shuzhi, Shi Shenghan, Li Fengqi, Feng Youquan, Ma Zongshen, Zou Dexiou, Zhang Bo etc. , laying a solid foundation for the establishment and development of the college with their noble morals, high academic achievements, rigorous scholarship attitude and rich scientific research fruits. After several generations’ hard work, the college is becoming stronger and more influential. It has successfully developed characteristic specialties in History of Agriculture, Rural Sociology, Rural Legal System and Social Management, teaching and research bases covering studies in Ideological and Political Education, History of Science and Technology, Sociology and Law Science.
The college is responsible for the teaching tasks of over 400 courses, including political theory courses for non-major college students, courses for majored undergraduate students and optional courses for cultural quality education. It has seven teaching and research sections including Marxist Theory, Outline of China’s Modern History, Moral Cultivation and Law Basics, Deng Xiaoping Theory and the Important Thought of the “Three Represents”, Law Science, Sociology, Literature and Arts, three research institutions: Institute of Chinese Agricultural History and Culture, Shaanxi Research Centre for Agricultural Law and Environmental Law and Shaanxi Research Center fro Rural Sociology.
The college has two undergraduate programs (Law Science, Sociology), nine correspondence education courses of different levels, involving Law Science, Sociology, Communications, Legal Affairs etc. and two minor programs ( Secretary and Law Science). The college is authorized to confer Ph. D. degree in level II discipline in Agriculture and Rural Development, and master’s degree in ten disciplines including Science of Environment and Natural Resources Protection Law, Sociology, Vocational and Technical Education, Agriculture and Rural Development, History of Science and Technology, etc.. Over 1500 doctors, postgraduates, undergraduates and junior college students have graduated from the college. More than 700 management and technical cadres have been trained here. Currently the college has an enrollment of about 1000 students.
At present, the college has formed a talent contingent of qualified teachers and innovative researchers of 85, 70 of them are full-time teachers, including 10 professors (researchers), 21 associate professors and associate researchers, two doctoral supervisors and 27 master’s supervisors. Five of those teachers are doctoral degree holders, 37 master’s degrees holders and 23 master’s degree candidates.
In recent 5 years, it has accomplished more than 40 projects sponsored by National Social Science Fund and Shaanxi Social Science Fund etc. Among them there are two international cooperation research projects, and 12 provincial or ministerial projects. More than 500 papers and 79 academic books have been published and over 40 science and teaching awards have been gained. It has invited some famous experts and professors from the USA, Japan, UK, Israel and Taiwan for exchange and also dispatched teachers abroad to participate in various academic conferences and collaborative research and to establish broad academic relationship.
The college also houses comprehensive laboratories for Humanity Science, such as Simulation Court, Library, Laboratory for Social Investigation and Data Analysis and Multi-Media Studio, which have provided perfect material basis for the academic research and teaching activities.
Facing the new opportunities and challenges of 21st century, the college strives to become a multi-disciplinary teaching and research college characterized with personnel training and scientific study in Northwestern China in ten to fifteen years.
