Department of Foreign Languages
Department of Foreign Languages (FLD) is one of the 18 colleges (department) of Northwest A & F University. The department consists of 1 administrative office and 3 teaching and research sections: T&R Section for English Majors, T&R Section of College English, T&R Section of Graduate English. It also has a Language Teaching and Research Center, a Language Training Center, a Department Library, and an Institute of Agricultural Science and Technology Translation.
Presently the FLD has a teaching and administrative staff of 132 and boasts an array of highly qualified faculty with 5 professors, 9 associate professors, 52 lecturers and over ten foreign experts. Over 50 teachers have received master’s degrees or diplomas and more than 20 have studied aboard. It provides undergraduate and postgraduate education for English majors, as well as courses in the English language for non-major college students for bachelor to doctoral degrees. Besides English language teaching, it also offers courses in Japanese, Russian, German and French. Meanwhile, the department provides English language training programs.
The FLD offers 2 undergraduate programs: English (started in 2000) and International Trade (started in 2006) and 1 graduate program to confer master’s degree: Linguistics and Applied Linguistics in foreign languages (started in 2007) .Currently, the department has an enrollment of 442 full-time undergraduates and 18 postgraduates. By the end of July, 2007, 190 students have graduated from the department with BA degree.
In recent years, over 30 projects involving language teaching reform and research have been undertaken with the total fund amounting to 200,000 yuan and 16 achievements have been awarded. Over 170 academic papers and 50 works have been published. At the same time, students in the university actively participated in all kinds of English contests including National English Contest for College Students and “CCTV” Cup English Speaking Contest and won many prizes at different levels.
